Chapter Sixteen

SPANISH TOWN, JAMAICA

Kofi was on his back, sweating. The sheet under him was wet. He could smell the musk of his body—a salty scent. He had on nothing but a pair of white briefs. Heat radiated through the room. The windows were open, but there was no breeze. The darkness did not help. Kofi concentrated on keeping still. He did not want to think.

He had been having terrible stomach cramps and diarrhea. He knew it was the oranges, but he felt like eating nothing else. The pain came in waves.

Keisha was far from him. This is what he wanted. He wanted her to go away and leave him to write, to think, to feel for a moment that things were not getting away from him. The salt of his weeping had dried on his face. That morning he had cried for Aunt Josephine. And the emptiness that he had not felt at the time of the funeral was now consuming him. He did not need Keisha around for this.

Still, he lay there and thought about her. He had already forgotten her face. He knew that this should make him panic, and in a way he did panic. But it was calculated—a well-considered reaction. Another part of him was unable to panic, only able to watch the way things changed around him. It was now quite dark.
